Rowlf on The Jimmy Dean Show

Last night, a brief Twitter exchange between writer Chris Roberson and myself got me to thinking about the early career of one of the Muppets, Rowlf the Dog. As noted in his Wikipedia entry, ‘Rowlf was actually the first true Muppet ‘star’ as a recurring character on The Jimmy Dean Show, first appearing in a show telecast on September 19, 1963.”

Exploring further for online evidence of Rowlf’s role on the shoe, I was fortunate to run across a seven-minute clip of Dean and Rowlf discussing music, courtesy of the always enlightening blog for the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive. Why would an animation site cover the early work of a Muppet? As noted by the blog: “Animators can learn a lot from puppeteers when it comes to creating a living, breathing character.”

Check out the post, as it is almost as informative as the YouTube clip.

Live Nick Cave: Circa 1999

This video (sent to me by friend of the blog, Kaya Oakes) is a treat on multiple levels:

  • Nick Cave on piano, playing his song Into My Arms
  • The guy on the left at the beginning? John Cale
  • The quality of Cave’s piano on this song

My thanks to Oakes for making me aware.

Missed It: Cake/Letterman Webcast from June 2011

So after watching the Peter Gabriel live webcast on the David Letterman website (yes, more about that later this week, if I am lucky), I discovered this Cake webcast from June 2011.

Scroll to around the 42-minute mark for what is likely my favorite Cake song (Short Skirt/Long Jacket). Dear Cake, I am sorry for the times I accidentally called you Weezer. It was nothing personal.

Just Discovered: The Jimmy Stewart Show (1971)

In reading about the passing of TV producer/writer Hal Kanter, I learned that among his many projects throughout his career, he once helped develop a 1971 sitcom starring the film legend, Jimmy Stewart.

I am not sure which I enjoy from this project: Stewart riding a bike through the opening credits or the guest star for that week’s episode: Kate Jackson.

Great Songs from 1988: Toni Childs’ Don’t Walk Away

Back in 2008, I expressed my admiration for the old short-lived 1980s band, David & David, by discussing the solo work of one of the Davids, David Baerwald. Earlier tonight, while researching for another post, I was reminded of Toni Childs‘ great 1988 debut album, Union, which featured the input of the other David, David Ricketts. It’s hard to pick my favorite song from the album (which reflects the best of both the one-of-a-kind singer/songwriter Childs [name me someone else with such a unique voice] and Ricketts) but I will settle on the most popular cut, Don’t Walk Away.

Apparently the two collaborated again, more recently, on 2009′s Keep the Faith, which hopefully I will track down one of these days.

Discovered Gem: Carson Interviewing Letterman Post-Leno Announcement

I am so glad that Johnny Carson was smart enough to get ownership/control of his Tonight Show run. Earlier this year, the folks managing Carson’s media properties started posting YouTube clips from a variety of Tonight Show moments (152 videos to date). The videos cover a variety of celebrities and topics. But for me, the best discovery so far is this 1991 David Letterman appearance, where Carson how Letterman feels about Jay Leno being named to replace Carson. But Carson being Carson, he asks the question in his own unique way.

The mutual admiration the two men had for each other is obvious in this clip.

Missed It: Ferguson’s Halloween Clip

Craig Ferguson had Neil Gaiman, Amanda Palmer, Stephen Merritt and Moby play a cover of The Rocky Horror Picture Show‘s Science Fiction Double Feature on his Halloween episode. It was hilarious how the crowd cheered when Gaiman plays a few piano notes, like parents for a child at a recital. Also interesting to see Palmer work the crowd quite unlike any other musician has ever on The Late Late Show.

This was in addition to another fun Ferguson musical opening number.

I Love Good Commercials: Allstate’s Mayhem

Having known actor Dean Winter’s work from various shows, including Rescue Me and 30 Rock, I remain fascinated by his role in the Allstate Mayhem commercials. After visiting Allstate’s YouTube page, I’ve decided this GPS one is likely my favorite ad of the Mayhem brand  lot, for its absurdity.

But here’s the really unique thing, as much as I enjoy the ads, it’s highly unlikely I would ever use Allstate. Sorry folks. But great ads.
